Insurance-Covered Transportation
Learn how to check whether your WheelCare ride may be covered by private insurance or Alabama Medicaid.
Private Insurance
Some private insurance plans include non-emergency medical transportation benefits. Coverage varies by plan and passenger.
How to Check Your Coverage
- Call the member-services number on the back of your insurance card.
- Ask whether your plan includes non-emergency medical transportation, sometimes called NEMT.
- Ask whether prior authorization, a copay, or another out-of-pocket cost applies.
- Request WheelCare as your transportation provider.
Alabama Medicaid
Eligible Alabama Medicaid recipients may qualify for transportation to covered medical services through the Non-Emergency Transportation program, also called NET or NEMT.
How to Request Transportation
- Call Alabama Medicaid at 1-800-362-1504 .
- Select option 4 for Non-Emergency Transportation.
- Call at least five days before transportation is needed, when possible.
- Ask to use WheelCare as your transportation provider.
Before You Call
Information to Have Ready
Alabama Medicaid may ask for the following information when you request transportation:
Recipient’s name and Medicaid identification number
Home address and telephone number
Medical provider’s name, address, and telephone number
Appointment date and time
Pickup and return information
Reason for or type of medical appointment
Whether the recipient walks or uses a wheelchair
Special transportation or accessibility requirements
Whether an escort or attendant will accompany the recipient
Medicaid Authorization Is Required
Alabama Medicaid will confirm the recipient’s eligibility, determine whether the appointment and transportation qualify, and arrange or authorize an appropriate transportation provider.
Do not arrange a Medicaid-paid ride directly with WheelCare before receiving authorization from Alabama Medicaid. Request WheelCare when you call Medicaid and wait for confirmation that your transportation has been approved.
If urgent medical care could not be scheduled five days in advance, call Alabama Medicaid as soon as possible. For a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
